What are stem cells?

Stem cells are the primordial cells of all somatic cells. They are not fully differentiated and have the potential to regenerate various tissues and organs. Stem cells also exist in many cell tissues. They can form a variety of specialized cells through mitosis and differentiation, and can provide more stem cells by self-renewal. Human stem cells can be divided into two categories: embryonic stem cells and adult stem cells. Embryonic stem cells are derived from the inner cell mass of the embryo, while adult stem cells come from various tissues (such as blood, fat, bone marrow...). In adult tissue, mesenchymal stem cells and precursor cells act as the body's repair system and supplement adult tissue.
Stem cells can now be artificially extracted, cultured or transformed into a number of specialized cells, which can form the constituent cells of a variety of specific tissues, such as muscles or nerves. Adult stem cells with high plasticity have been normally used in medical treatment.
